Four Seasons of Living in Valley Ridge

One of the things residents love most about Valley Ridge is how dramatically the community changes with each season.

Spring brings flowering trees, green fairways, returning wildlife, and residents emerging onto pathways after winter. Community gardens begin to fill with activity as gardeners prepare for another growing season.

Summer transforms Valley Ridge into an outdoor paradise. Golfers enjoy long evenings on the course, families gather at parks and playgrounds, and residents spend countless hours exploring pathways along the Bow River.

Autumn may be the community's most spectacular season. Mature poplar, aspen, and cottonwood trees create a stunning display of gold, orange, and yellow colours throughout the neighbourhood. The golf course and river valley become some of Calgary's most photographed landscapes.

Winter offers a completely different kind of beauty. Snow-covered pathways, frost-covered trees, and easy access to nearby skiing create a true winter lifestyle. Residents enjoy skating on the ice rink, hockey, skiing, snowshoeing through the golf course, and winter walk with their dogs through the peaceful valley.

The changing seasons are one of the reasons Valley Ridge continues to attract buyers looking for a community that offers more than simply a place to live. It offers a year-round lifestyle connected to nature and outdoor recreation.

From spring gardens to summer golf, autumn colours to winter adventures, Valley Ridge delivers something special every month of the year.

Why Valley Ridge Is One of Calgary's Best Communities for Mountain Access

One of the biggest advantages of living in Valley Ridge is its strategic location on Calgary's western edge.

For outdoor enthusiasts, every weekend begins with a head start. Residents can access Highway 1 within minutes, making trips to Canmore, Banff, Kananaskis, Nakiska, Lake Louise, and Sunshine Village faster and more convenient than many other Calgary communities.

For families who ski, snowboard, hike, bike, camp, or explore the Rocky Mountains, Valley Ridge provides a significant lifestyle advantage.

A Saturday morning ski trip to Nakiska or Sunshine starts with less city traffic and more time on the slopes. Summer adventures to Kananaskis or Banff become easier and more spontaneous.

Many Valley Ridge residents choose the community specifically because it allows them to enjoy the best of both worlds: a full-service Calgary neighbourhood with direct access to Alberta's most spectacular outdoor destinations.

Whether you're heading west for a ski weekend, mountain biking adventure, hiking trip, or family camping excursion, Valley Ridge puts the mountains within easy reach.

The Hidden History of Valley Ridge: From Happy Valley Campground to One of Calgary’s Most Unique Communities 🌲🏕️

Today, Valley Ridge is known for its beautiful homes, championship golf course, river valley pathways, and peaceful natural surroundings. But long before the community became one of northwest Calgary’s most desirable neighbourhoods, the area had a very different identity.

Many longtime Calgarians remember the land as Happy Valley Campground and Trailer Park—a hidden recreational destination tucked into the Bow River valley that became one of Calgary’s favourite family getaway spots during the 1960s and 1970s.

Happy Valley: Calgary’s Original Family Adventure Destination

Before residential development transformed the area into modern-day Valley Ridge, Happy Valley was a bustling outdoor recreation destination that attracted families from all over Calgary.

Often described by locals as a small-scale “Disneyland of the West,” Happy Valley featured:

  • Campgrounds and trailer sites

  • Mini golf and a par-3 golf course

  • Pony rides and family attractions

  • Swimming pools and recreation areas

  • Fish ponds stocked for families

  • Ski hills with poma lifts and night skiing

At the time, it was considered one of Calgary’s most unique recreational properties—a place where families could escape the city without ever truly leaving it.

The Old Ski Hill Still Lives On

One of the most fascinating parts of Valley Ridge history is that traces of the original Happy Valley ski hill can still be seen today.

If you explore the hillsides and pathway systems throughout Valley Ridge carefully, you’ll notice unusual cleared runs cutting through the trees. These openings are remnants of the original ski hill slopes that once operated in the valley decades ago.

Long before large mountain resorts became part of everyday Calgary life, local families learned to ski right here in Happy Valley.

Hidden Historical Features Throughout Valley Ridge

One of the reasons Valley Ridge feels so unique today is because pieces of its past remain hidden throughout the community.

Residents exploring the golf course and pathways can still discover:

  • An old trestle-style staircase hidden near the golf course

  • Cleared hillside sections from the former ski hill

  • Abandoned shacks and rustic structures tucked into wooded areas

  • Historic landscape features connected to the campground era

These hidden reminders create a sense of mystery and history that makes Valley Ridge unlike many newer Calgary communities.

A Community Built Around Nature

The transformation from Happy Valley Campground into Valley Ridge preserved much of what made the area special in the first place—its connection to nature.

Today, residents enjoy:

  • Extensive pathway systems

  • Mature trees and river valley views

  • Access to the Bow River

  • Golf, recreation, and outdoor living

  • A quieter atmosphere surrounded by nature

That original spirit of outdoor recreation and family connection still defines the community today.

Why Valley Ridge Has So Much Character

Unlike many suburban developments built on open prairie land, Valley Ridge evolved from a destination that generations of Calgarians already loved and explored.

That history gives the neighbourhood a unique personality and sense of depth that residents truly appreciate.

Whether it’s discovering old ski hill clearings on a walk, spotting abandoned structures hidden in the trees, or hearing longtime Calgarians share stories about visiting Happy Valley decades ago, the past is still woven into the landscape of Valley Ridge.

Today, Valley Ridge remains one of Calgary’s most desirable communities, offering residents a rare combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, rich history, and a strong sense of community. It is more than just a beautiful neighbourhood—it is a place with stories, history, and a deep connection to Calgary’s outdoor lifestyle that continues to define it today. 🌲🏕️⛷️

Paramount Real Estate: Deep Roots in the Valley Ridge Community

For many real estate companies, a community is simply a place where they do business. For Paramount Real Estate, Valley Ridge is much more than that—it's home.

Our connection to Valley Ridge goes back nearly two decades. Nineteen years ago, our family built our home here with Morrison Homes and made the decision to put down roots in what was then one of Calgary's newest northwest communities. What began as a place to raise our family quickly became a community that shaped our lives, our friendships, and ultimately our business.

Today, Paramount Real Estate proudly serves clients throughout Calgary, but Valley Ridge remains a special place for our family and our company.

Helping Shape the Community

As Valley Ridge continued to grow, we had the opportunity to become involved in some of the area's development.

Paramount Real Estate partnered with Cove Properties in the successful development and sale of the condominium and townhouse complex located adjacent to the Valley Ridge Golf Course. Watching the community evolve while helping create housing opportunities for residents remains one of our proudest local accomplishments.

Having witnessed Valley Ridge's growth firsthand gives us a unique understanding of the community's history, housing options, and long-term value.

Memories of Valley Ridge's Early Days

Longtime residents may remember some of the businesses and gathering places that helped define the early years of the community.

One local favourite was Van Gogh's restaurant. Many residents still fondly remember its famous pasta sauce, which featured a unique blend of spices and a subtle hint of allspice that made it unlike anything else in Calgary. It became a popular meeting place for neighbours and helped create the close-knit community atmosphere that still exists today.

Growing Up in Valley Ridge

Our four children were fortunate to grow up in Valley Ridge and participate in many of the programs that make the community so special.

Like many Valley Ridge families, weekends often revolved around community sports and activities. All four children participated in the Valley Ridge community soccer program, spending countless evenings on the fields with friends and teammates.

Before soccer, they started their athletic journeys in the community's tee-ball program as preschoolers, learning teamwork, sportsmanship, and making friendships that would last for years.

Hockey, Skiing, and the Valley Ridge Lifestyle

Sports became a major part of our family's life, and Valley Ridge provided the perfect home base.

Our boys played hockey with the Bow River Bruins before advancing into the Northwest Calgary Athletic Association (NWCAA) Quadrant program. Those early mornings, practices, and games became part of our family's routine and helped build lifelong skills and friendships.

Our daughters discovered a passion for alpine skiing through the Nakiska Alpine Ski Association (NASA), training at both Nakiska Ski Area and WinSport. Living in Valley Ridge made accessing these world-class facilities incredibly convenient and helped support their development as athletes.

Today, skiing remains a significant part of our family lifestyle and one of the many reasons we appreciate living in Calgary's west end.

Education Through the Years

One of the greatest advantages of raising a family in Valley Ridge has been access to excellent educational opportunities.

Over the years, our children have attended:

  • Our Lady of the Assumption School

  • St. Jean Brebeuf School

  • Springbank Middle School

  • National Sport School at WinSport

Each school played an important role in their development, and together they reflect the wide range of educational options available to Valley Ridge families.

Today, all four of our children have attended the National Sport School, balancing academics with high-performance athletic pursuits.

More Than a Neighbourhood

For our family, Valley Ridge has never been just a place to live.

It is where our children learned to ride bikes, played their first sports, made lifelong friends, attended school, and developed their passions. It is where we built a home, built a business, and became part of a remarkable community.

That personal connection gives Paramount Real Estate a unique perspective when helping clients buy or sell homes in Valley Ridge. We don't simply market the community—we have lived its history, experienced its growth, and continue to enjoy everything it has to offer.

After nearly twenty years, we remain proud to call Valley Ridge home and look forward to helping future families discover why this community continues to be one of Calgary's most desirable places to live.

Looking for Valley Ridge Real Estate?

Whether you're searching for your first home, a golf course property, a townhouse, condominium, or a luxury estate backing onto the Bow River valley, Paramount Real Estate offers local knowledge that only comes from living in the community.

When it comes to Valley Ridge real estate, nobody knows the neighbourhood quite like the people who have called it home for nearly two decades. 🏡⛳🌲
